Why do automakers insist on making car with tiny little trunks when they could be making lift-backs.
Genesis coupe
2014 mustang'
2015 Mustang
RSX
Mustang Fox
They even work on sedans
But seriously liftbacks are so much more useful, tiny truck openings are a PITA.

lift backs are generally heavier and less rigid, also sell less compared to sedans. People who want a the luggage space will get a hatch or a wagon/suv.

but the foxbody hatch sold better than the notch backs.

the exception that proves the rule. I never said the automakers were correct :P

I just wish they made the tail-lights part of the truck so you don't get those crappy bulges for the lights, like your second photo.

That's not a 2014 Mustang, but I see your point

In my experience, people seem to think that "hatch" is a four-letter word. No idea why, but a lot of Americans seem to associate "hatchback" with "cheap". Which is a shame, because I much prefer hatches.

Can't, it's a safety thing. If you're on the side of the road rummaging through your trunk for the tire iron in the middle of the night, it's harder for someone passing to see you if your taillights are on your trunk and therefore pointing up when your trunk is open, especially if you're standing in such a way that the CHMSL is blocked as well.

Welcome to my world.
Coupes aren't a big seller, but I have a feeling, with some added practicality of a hatch, and genuinely attractive design, and perhaps a nice AWD system with a manual gearbox option, like say Focus RS's drivetrain, or WRX STI's drivetrain... I think they could be more popular than they are.
The trunk lid argument is exactly the same argument I make as to why Sedans are getting diminished to a body style that is solely sold on tradition anymore, not so much on actual advantage, as CUVs have practical advantages over sedans, with very little margin for dis-advantage, and it is no wonder why the CUV market is growing, and the sedan market is languishing, in terms of people buying multi-passenger vehicles.
However, for vehicles with fewer regular passengers, sporty coupes with versatile hatches could make great weekend fun-driving cars, commuters that are both fun and space efficient, and generally great 'second cars' to the family CUV/minivan/truckster.

The closest are probably the Audi SUVs, where the tail lights go with the hatch. They also have bit reflectors / lights (?) on the rear bumper, so I guess that addresses the safety issue.

Hatch FTW! Or loss, idk.

I seriously don't get it. It seems to be a Baby Boomer thing. My mom thinks every hatchback looks like a Gremlin. And then my parents complain about lack of trunk space...

thats because they remember when trunks were trunks, and sedans were glad of it.
look at this thing at's like 4ftx4ft

my point exactly. To me the hatch is one of the Vettes selling points. Because it's easier to trow you golf bags in than, slide them in threw a tiny trunk.

still better than if they had tried to hive it a trunk!

It's all dependent on the studio design though. If they don't want that type of roofline in their theme, you're not getting a hatch, and most people don't want one enough to justify the tradeoffs.

Hell, I get openly mocked by my parents because I went out of my way to get a Mazda3 hatchback instead of the sedan. Yes, I apologize for wanting something that is both more practical and more attractive....

you can have a car that looks exactly like s coupe but still has a lift back done right it makes almost o impact on tye exterior design. And "fastback" coupes like the Genesis and Mustang are prime examples of a wasted opportunity.

Actually, it would have a huge impact to both the interior and exterior, and most customers do not value it enough to be worth the tradeoffs (likely price increase). Them's the breaks.

It doesn't have to impact the exterior styling. For the example the Mazda6
regular sedan
Liftback
Almost no difference. Maybe some lost rear visibility.

It greatly affects the cut lines, which by definition affects styling and increases complexity. There's a reason they don't do this any more.

That's the genius of the Skoda Superb Twindoor. Both a saloon and a hatch.

In saloon guise the opening is regular coupe/saloon size for putting odds and ends in, but when opening as a hatch dramatically increases the area for you to put say large amounts of shopping in or putting in larger items.
It's why so many are taxis where I live because for the light shopper with one or two bags you can quickly open the tailgate and put in the bags and go while the larger shopper you can open it fully you can organise and stow the shopping more securely.
